East Boston Chronicle. ?Eastie Rising?

East Boston is changing for the better. I believe a foot bridge from East Boston over to the North End like the Cambridge bridge to the Back Bay would “blow up” East Boston and the real estate values would rise just as high as Cambridge and South Boston. When the red line connects to the [...]

Chicago living: Most walkable condos

Chicago is a beautiful place to live, so why not enjoy it? The Windy City might offer some of the best public transportation options in the country–no matter how many times the Chicago Reader may knock it–but there’s a lot of homes in the city that are just steps away from a lot that Chicago has to offer. In addition to living just blocks away from your work, living in the city of Chicago–particularly in the Loop, Near South Side, or River North–has the benefit of being near the some of the best shopping and restaurants in the world.
It’s with this in mind that Chicago CondoDomain highlights some of the “most walkable condos” in the city. This list, which can be seen at the the bottom of this homepage, documents 10 recent condo/home listings that are considered ‘walkable’ to the things that matter to you most, whether it be public transportation or great shopping. Home buyers can click on this widget to view the details of a listing, including a map which shows where all these condos are situated in downtown Chicago.
Clicking into one of these listings, prospective home buyers can learn pretty much everything one needs to know about a property without stepping foot inside the front door. For example, this listing for 57 E Delaware Place lists what you’d expect to see in a listing, like amenities such as a workout room and whirlppol, but also the less published information, like taxes and information about the condo building’s management.
While this ‘most walkable condos’ widget is quite handy in looking for downtown places, CondoDomain also provides other avenues to research prospective walkable homes. (And, no, it doesn’t involve hitting the pavement). Rather, just head to Chicago.CondoDomain.com and search by neighborhood, like River North. This will give a longer list of walkable condos that provide just as much detail about the listings.
So forget achy feet in the pursuit of finding a walkable condo in the areas of Chicago you frequent most. Just check out CondoDomain for all the most recently listed walkable condos.

All About Being Green: The National Sustainable Design Expo In DC

It was such a great opportunity to attend the ?National Sustainable Design Expo? that was on Saturday, April 16, 2011 ? Sunday, April 17, 2011. The Environmental Protection Agency Earth Day event offered a unique opportunity to learn about how a person can make a difference in protecting the environment and take a look into the future with the various technology designs for a sustainable planet.
As for me, I thought not only in terms of a sustainable planet but as for the potential homebuyer and what the potential can do for their homes. I visited and spoke to a few exhibitors regarding greening your home living which are noted below.
Exhibitors
Healthy Homes for Children
Website: http://yosemite.epa.gov/ochp/ochpweb.nsf/content/homepage.htm
This exhibit was great in terms of when a homebuyer purchased a home for their family and become familiar with the tips on protecting their children from environmental risks. Several of these tips included:

Help children breathe easier. This includes keeping the home clean as much as possible to avoid dust, mold, and certain household pests; and walk or use bicycle. Protect children from lead poisoning.  How so? If you home was built before 1978, you can test your home for lead paint hazards; wash floors and window sills to protect kids from dust and peeling paint; and run the cold water for at least 30 seconds to flush lead from pipes Keep pesticides and other toxic chemicals away from children. Try to read product labels and follow directions, store food and trash in closed containers to keep pests from coming into your home Protect children from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Protect children from contaminated fish and polluted water.
Safeguard children from high levels of radon
Protect children from too much sun
Keep children and mercury apart

Even though these are some great tips to maintaining your home, the exhibitor put more focus on checking your home for lead poisoning since most of the DC homes were built before 1978.
Green Technology Exhibit
My Environment
Website: http://www.epa.gov/myenvironment/
This was a cool exhibit in which it shows you what is happening in your environment according to zip code. Once you go to the above website about ?my environment?; it gives you like a checklist of things about your environment including:  the air, the land, and the water around you, your community, your health, and environmental reports. For example, if you type in your zip code it will show the air quality in the neighborhood which can determine if the potential homebuyer want to reside in the area.
Solar Panel Exhibit
This one really fascinated me as I see a few solar panels on DC homes.  The exhibitor was a company named KEnergy Solar in which their mission is to ?start saving your planet and the money in your wallet?.  This exhibit was more of the benefits of using solar on your home and the effects of solar in the future. Some pointers that I took from this were the following:

  The benefits of choosing solar

Renewable energy sources does not burn fossil fuel reducing the amount of pollutants in the air
The Solar Energy system does not have moving parts as it operates silently and expected last more than 25 plus years
Solar systems can offset construction of new coal or nuclear facilities
State grants are available per state offsetting 13-40% of the solar system cost
Hedge against the rising cost of electricity
Lower your electric bill and reduce your carbon footprint

I found this event to be fascinating as it was lead by EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) but offered other resources on how to save energy for your home by visiting Energy Star website.
Do you think is a great idea of using solar on homes and vehicles now and in the near future as this event presented?
